A heritage-listed building on Lake Street in Northbridge, more than a hundred years old, and Escape This’s very first venue. These are its memoirs.

Forty-Eight has housed vampires, ghosts, a cannibal, an undertaker and one pirate who never quite fitted in. It is fond of all of them. It is fonder of being the original, and it would like everyone to remember that.

Forty-Eight’s younger sibling, five to ten minutes’ walk away under Hay Street Mall, with the adventure rooms: pirates, pyramids, a bank vault and a Wild West gaol.

The Basement has more rooms, more daylight shoppers walking overhead and, Forty-Eight suspects, a better publicist. They write to each other. The letters are not always kind.

Escape This Sydney CBD, on George Street in the middle of Australia’s biggest city. It took copies of some of Forty-Eight’s favourite tenants, including Cannibal and The Possession.

Forty-Eight was flattered, then furious, then flattered again. It has decided that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and that Sydney’s ghosts are not as good at creaking.
